@ Pooran congratulating Marsh after his century vs GT IPL2025
Match Overview :
The IPL 2025 64th match happened on May 22 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, with LSG playing GT. Rishabh Pant helped LSG put up a strong score of 235/3 in their 20 overs, thanks mainly to centuries from Marsh and Pooran. Gujarat Titans, led by Shubman Gill, put on 202/9 on the board but came up 33 runs short due to a terrific 52 from Shahrukh Khan. The game revealed that LSG can score lots of runs and also hold their ground when defending a big score, despite bowling lineups affected by injuries.
Marsh and Pooran lead the way with the bat for LSG :
Mitchell Marsh opened the innings for LSG and hit a brilliant century to lead his team during the match. With Aiden Markram, Marsh established the game’s direction by scoring 121 runs together for the second wicket, bettering LSG’s previous record for that wicket of 116. Marsh felt comfortable going for big hits only after he analyzed the conditions in the first over: “In T20s, if you’re batting with ten needed for victory, stress rises, but I was glad I took time to understand the field and then go big.” With such success in his century, he showed how adaptable and experienced he had become over his years since playing for Deccan Chargers in the IPL.
Nicholas Pooran chipped in with an aggressive half-century after Marsh’s heroics, putting LSG on course for 235/3. With their difficult strategy, the two played the GT bowlers so well that even their opening performances could not get enough wickets. Pant also added his part to the scoreboard, going at 266, a quick pace that helped LSG pile up even more runs. LSG proved it could get big scores and play fast, finishing the inning with an intimidating target set for GT to beat.
GT Has Found Bowling to Be Tough :
Prasidh Krishna, Mohammed Siraj and R Sai Kishore were tasked with leading GT’s bowling, expected to cheap cricket items stop LSG. Still, the lack of wickets early meant LSG’s batsmen took over. As per Shubman Gill, the extras they gave away ended up being costly. Rabada’s return to the team did not go well and some people on X said he appeared average and should be benched. Rashid Khan, normally one of Afghanistan’s biggest strengths, allowed too many runs at crucial moments. It was largely because GT couldn’t carry out their plans against a batting pitch that LSG scored so much.
GT’s Chase had a good foundation, but it didn’t last:
For GT to reach 236, the team’s top order needed to get things started well. Shubman Gill, B Sai Sudharsan and Jos Buttler had helped GT win many games with their 17 valuable half-centuries and a century. But, in the first few overs, Will O’Rourke dismissed Sai Sudharsan and thus spoiled GT’s progress. A wicket for Jos Buttler shortly after Allarakonda meant the middle order had to face Grant. An injury to Akash Singh, who had to leave the field immediately after only bowling one ball, put GT slightly ahead, but LSG’s bowlers managed to keep up.
Shahrukh Khan and Sherfane Rutherford teamed up to inspire, as Shahrukh scored his second IPL fifty from just 22 balls. Their strong hitting which consisted of quality and long balls, kept Georgia Tech in the game for the first 15 overs. Hits by Shahrukh and Rutherford left plenty of opportunities to score, as online posts mentioned the pitch was getting better and better for batting. With his pair of wickets in the 17th over, removing Rutherford and Tewatia, Will O’Rourke helped LSG turn the match their way. Rutherford tried to lift a slow delivery into the air, but his catch by long-on went to the bowler. Tewatia’s soft stroke just brought a single instead.
Avesh Khan ended GT’s hopes when he got Shahrukh out after bowling a series of yorkers, with the winning catch coming when the bat hit an edge and was caught at cover on the fifth ball. The last run out was thanks to Ayush Badoni, who dismissed R Sai Kishore by bowling a slower, looping ball that straightened to knock over the stumps. No boundaries were hit in the last four overs as GT gave up and ended their innings on 202/9.
O’Rourke and Badoni lead the Bowling group in LSG :
LSG’s bowlers coped well after Akash Singh was injured early in the match. Will O’Rourke made a big impact with three wickets, among them Rutherford and Tewatia. It was his slower ball to remove Rutherford that turned things around and his strong pressure bowling drew positive comments. While Ayush Badoni is mainly known for batting, he impressed with his bowling and helped end GT’s innings. Yorkers from Avesh Khan gave GT no space to try turning the game around in the final stages. The skipper was pleased to see his team’s bowlers stay focused, especially since getting the top three early helped them gain control over the match until Shahrukh stepped in.
Post-Match Reflections :
Pant, the captain of LSG, said that despite not being able to make playoffs, LSG was still performing well and aiming to play solid cricket. He gave credit to the bowlers’ calmness and pointed out what Marsh and Pooran achieved in the match. After the defeat, Shubman Gill said Gujarat gave away too many runs and must come back strong in their last game against Chennai Super Kings. Saying he owed the win to his partnership with Markram and his early, patient build-up, Mitchell Marsh was named Player of the Match.
Conclusion :
It was clear from the 33-run win over GT that LSG is capable of out-batting and bowling out its opponents. Marsh’s century helped put his team ahead, Pooran’s half-century gave them a strong base and Will O’Rourke taking wickets made the difference in the win. GT fell short despite Shahrukh’s effort because, by losing their top bats early, they accumulated too high a required run rate. This match will always be seen as a spectacular series of sixes when LSG fought back to beat the best team in the season.
