@KL Rahul accepting the greetings of the audience after scoring a century vs England |
Day 4 Highlights
Morning session Kick-off & Early Drama:
India came back with a lead of 96 runs, and KL Rahul (47*) and Shubman Gill (6*) were in the middle.
The lead bowler of England Josh Tongue was probing and in the first 24 overs, the two were only cautious. Soon in the game Gill was out to Brydon Carse in the first over of the Indian innings, bowled lbw smashing on his stumps, a shocking blow to the Indian captain
When the scoreboard showed 90/2, Rahul took over the responsibility of an anchor and created an important alliance with Rishabh Pant
Rahul grew more alert and then rained boundaries, the first of the day being in the form of a sublime cover drive off Tongue and after awhile, he brought up his half-century in 87 balls
Pant was flamboyant and daring and pushed boundaries and stole fours . The safety net was provided through DRS, as the inside edge that was a thick one was heard loud in appeal to lbw.
The alliance was 61 runs deep by lunch and India had a good lead in the form of 159 runs at 153/3.
Afternoon Session- Acceleration & Milestone:
England attack was Bashir, Carse, Stokes and Root after lunch. Rahul and Pant put on a run feast to take the lead over 200 with Pant hitting two sixes against Bashir
Rahul class was demonstrated by elegant hits, up to 90s and then his second Test century in England on 202 balls. By then India had progressed past 225/3
Pant was not that far behind - he blazed thirty-five and smashed a storm of fours and sixes: 4, 4, 6, 4 in one over off Root . He scored more than a century stylishly and became the first Indian wicket-keeper to score centuries in both innings against England in test matches and only the second ever keeper after Andy 46 Flower
He scored his century in 130 balls hitting 13 fours and 2 sixes
It was tea time when India were 298/4, with a lead of 304, with Rahul (120*) and Pant (118*) in the middle
Pant celebrated with his eye-mask after his second ton with a joke on Sunil Gavaskar when he advised him to do a somersault .
Late Afternoon to Evening- Tail Wags, England Fightback:
India ran out of steam after tea: Pant was dismissed for 118, top-edged to long-on against Bashir
Shardul Thakur and Karun Nair made contributions and the last session saw a collapse.Josh Tongue produced a devastating over, taking 3 wickets in a single over, one of them was Siraj and the other was Bumrah, and making India 364 total very dangerous, with 6 wickets down and only 37 runs scored
India was all out at 364 and England were required to score 371.In the first innings, Jasprit Bumrah ended with a good 5/83
Meanwhile Siraj and company made all possible efforts to close the game.
At stumps, England was 21/0, and Crawley (12*) and Duckett (9*) were off the hook in the first few overs
India could only have wished they made a breakthrough but England held on.
Important Facts & Trivia:
- KL Rahul: A patient but breathtaking 137, his second Test century in England in 202 balls; surpassed Rahul Dravid as a batsman with the most Test centuries as an opener in England by an Indian batsman
- Rishabh Pant: Made 134 and 118 the first Indian wicket-keeper to make two centuries against England and the second wicket-keeper after Andy Flower to make two centuries in a single Test
- Josh Tongue: He played a crucial part in breaking India tail as he took a hat-trick-like spell and three wickets in an over.
- Mohammed Siraj: Took England into the chase, but did not manage to take any wickets in the last stanza.
What’s Next?
Day 5 is a tempting pursuit of England: 371 runs to get. They will seek to prevent early dismissals and rely on safe opening by Crawley and Duckett. India, whose lead seamer Bumrah and Siraj remain fresh, will look to pick early wickets to squeeze a first Test victory.
To conclude Day 4 was a rollercoaster: India batters (Rahul & Pant) established dominant positions, England took out India tails and now the 371 chase brings in an interesting twister to the ending.
