@Gill's reaction after scoring a century in the second innings vs England 2025 |
Morning session- India take control with attacking intent
India started Day 4 with a colossal lead: a powerful first-innings lead of 587 runs, thanks to Shubman Gill record 269
Deciding to push their lead further, India took to the second innings in the hope of creating an insurmountable total and depriving the English of any hopes of a resurgence.
Afternoon session - Historic tons & declaration looms
- In inspirational form Gill had knocked off a half-century in quick-fire style at lunch, with magnificent strokeplay, with calculating drives and graceful cuts, and elevated strokes to all quarters.
- Rishabh Pant came in at the other end, and both of them drove the innings, scoring approximately 113 runs in that second session, moving on to attack mode now.
Everything changed after lunch, the issues began to move exponentially in India:
- Pant has charged to a rapid 50 off 58 balls, with a fast pace being set .
- Then Gill took over the masterclass: he drove to 150, and then he sprinted to 161 with mighty slog-sweeps that left the ropes several times in his wake
- Pant, who reached his half-century, made a breezy 65 off 58 deliveries, hitting a productive 110-run fourth-wicket partnership with Gill and creating a base to make a huge declaration
India ended their second innings on 427/6 leaving England with an impossible target of 608 to win. The plan was perfectly clear, make England feel like a bully with an impossible goal, and offer bowlers as much time as possible.
It was the masterpiece of Gill, who scored 200 in the second innings (in addition to his double in the first).
Post-tea / Evening session England collapse under strain
England now started off in chase, but soon were in sore plight:
- Zak Crawley was bowled leg before wicket (lbw) by Mohammed Siraj, who was out of the first ball (duck) and it was an early warning.
- Ben Duckett, who had floated along, edged Akash Deep and was cleaned up for 25, with the home team 30/2
- Joe Root, seemingly in good form, was brought undone by the sharp swing of Akash Deep, and was bowled out for 6, and England reduced to 50/3 .
- Gill batsmanship: After scoring a century in his last match, back to back centuries, the second being a commanding 161 in 162 balls, was a sign of both control and aggression. His batting record and stroke play destroyed English aspirations
- Pant rapid-fire cameo: A rapid-fire 65 made sure India racked up very fast before declaring, turning a large but secure total into one that had some psychological value
- Discipline of seamers: Akash Deep (4/98 in the Test so far) and Mohammed Siraj (6/119) made use of the conditions effectively, movement and pressure, particularly good with new balls
- The fall of England: Healthy scores were swept away in a hurry. Their top order in batting was overwhelmed by Indian bowlers who were well trained by Deps and Siraj .
India have now thoroughly beaten the psychological advantage and England are at the back foot:
- England have an astonishing ~550 to get in two days, which is an almost impossible task.
- Their resilience at the batting will be put to test. The likes of Brook and Root are also subject to an uphill pressure.
- A draw can happen in case England manage to survive the whole day five. However, India seaming attack appears ready to smell wickets.
Instead, India are just a few minutes away to making some piece of history by defeating England in Edgbaston in almost 58 years
The leadership provided by Gill is placed at the centre stage be it with his bat or his captaincy. He has established himself as an amazing imprint with 269 and 161 on his 2nd day as a Test skipper.
Player of the Match contender:
- Shubman Gill: Stole the show in two Test centuries (269 and 161) in that one game and forcefully established himself as the best Indian player.
- Cases made strongly by Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj who created dramatic collapses with seam discipline.
The 4th Day of the 2 nd Test at Edgbaston was a day of domination by Indians. Monumental batting by Shubman Gill, the whirlwind assistance of Pant, and unstoppable seam perfection broke the English challenge. England is now down 0-2 in the pursuit and the series stands tied at 1-1, and India is in line to take charge at Edgbaston- breaking a drought that dates back to decades.
And whatever your preferences in vintage Test theater, this was a day to live up to in the new age: aggressive batting to enforce an advantage, a lifeless pitch explored with pitiless bowling and the psychological shock of India playing their best cricket in foreign soil.
Brief scores:
India 587 and 427/6 decl.(Shubman Gill 161, Ravindra Jadeja 69*, Rishabh Pant
65; Josh Tongue 2-93) lead England 407 and 72/3 (Ben Duckett 25; Akash Deep 2-36, Mohammed Siraj 1-29) by 535 runs.
