| @England players celebrate after winning the match vs India at Lord's 2025 |
Match Context & Series Status
In June August 2025, India toured England to play a five-Test series as a part of the ICC World Test Championship cycleEngland and India went into the third Test with 1-1 after winning the first two Tests.Third Test at Lord was therefore crucial: India has a chance to have a series lead in England after 1986 and England had to go ahead on home turf.
First Innings (England)
England chose to bat first and scored 387 runs with a century by Joe Root. They responded with 387 of their own at Lord s due to a ton by KL Rahul .
First Innings (India)
As the match was level with both teams scoring the same number of runs in the first innings, the second innings of England and more importantly, how India will follow the target, came into the limelight. KL Rahul and co had made the Indians think that they could win but the game was open
England's 2nd innings and India's Chase:
- England finished their second innings on 192 declaring and giving India a target of 193 to win .
- India started slowly but crumbled soon: Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul and Washington Sundar departed rapidly and India were 112/8 at lunch on Day 5
- There was a thunderous collapse and then there was a gritty lower order resistance: Ravindra Jadeja (61* off 118 balls), Nitish Kumar Reddy and Jasprit Bumrah put up a stiff fight and rained runs and added hope. India went to 170 when the last pair to come in was Siraj and Jadeja. But the alliance was broken when Shoaib Bashir bowled Siraj, who rolled to the stumps and India was left 22 runs short.
Ben Stokes (England captain)
- Player of the Match, Stokes gave an epic all-round performance. He took five wickets across both innings and scored 44 and 33. as he led the bowling attack of England. He also Ran out Rishabh Pant at a key time and he managed to captaincy very well
- Stokes came back after hamstring surgery and a drastic weight loss; his hardness and performance exemplified his strength and leadership
Jofra Archer
- Archer has had a massive impact in his Test comeback since February 2021, taking three wickets and huge pressure on India as they went in pursuit of the target. He also cheered loudly when Rishabh Pant was dismissed an act which earned him a fine and a possible disciplinary action
- The youthful spinner whose ability and courage had attracted applause, Bashir secured the last wicket of Siraj by the bowling of a delivery which, pitching on, rolled on to knock the off stump. The viewers referred to him as a warrior even though he played despite being injured .
Ravindra Jadeja & Mohammed Siraj
- India were almost over the line with the help of Jadeja 61* (No. 7). His battle with Siraj made one of the most unforgettable lower-order partnerships in history. A standing ovation was given to Jadeja and Siraj when they were edging towards victory when India reached 170/9 but eventually they lost agonizingly short.
- The determined batting by Siraj all the way down to the ninth wicket almost paid off but a ball by Bashir rolled back over the stumps
- India gave away 63 extras to be exploited by England bowlers in a game where margin was small
- There was a word-war and emotions on the pitch: Mohammed Siraj taunting Ben Duckett during that Test, Archer jumping up and down in jubilation after dismissing Pant raised some disciplinary review rumors. The last day was the height of tensions as both parties went to the limit of competing sledging
- Ben Stokes provided a lighter moment after the match, saying Archer had been watching nostalgic clips of Sourav Ganguly shaking his shirt on the balcony of the Lord, mixing the cricketing history with light-heartedness in case of dramatic finish
- The inability of India to pursue sub-200 scores turns out to be a worrying trend. The game contributed to India having a poor record of failing to chase in the fourth innings under 200 runs, which questions lower-order and mental strength of the team.
Series Implications & What comes next?
- England are now in the lead with 2-1 in this five match series.
- The final Test will be played at The Oval starting 31 July till 4 August, preceded by the fourth Test that will start on 23 July at Old Trafford, ManchesterIn their last tour match, India will get to play England once again at Oval with an opportunity to draw the series.
- There is confusion in the availability of Jasprit Bumrah in the fourth Test because of workload management; captain Shubman Gill did not provide any concrete response after the third game other than stating that, “You will know soon”

Reflection and Key Takeaways:
- The spirit of rebound and team work in England proved to be successful. The leadership of Stokes, the aggression of Archer and injury- composure of Bashir were decisive.
- The way India fight back through Jadeja and Siraj was heroic but the top and middle order collapses carried a big toll.
- It was a Test match typical of battles of the past, close, tense, swings of the momentum, drama right to the last wicket.
- The fact that India has been doing terribly at chasing down a target in the fourth innings in less than 200 is a cause of red flags that the management and players will have to discuss before the next Tests.
- The dynamic of the series has changed: England now enjoy the lead and the psychological advantage as well.
It will go down in the history of Test cricket as a contemporary thriller, nine wickets lost, one wicket to win, a low run chase, twists and turns, an edge of the seat in Lord s. India fought hard but they could not manage to get over the line and England took over the series. It resumes in Manchester on 23 July 2025 as India pursue not only a Test, but redemption.
