| @Root greets the crowd after completing his century vs india in 4th test at Manchester 2025 |
Summary of the Match:
Day 3: Ending Day 3, England was 544/7 with a lead of 186 runs over India first innings total of 358 Joe Root Record Breaking Knock:
- Joe Root hit a magnificent 150, his 38th century in Test matches in 248 balls, to spearhead England domination of that day
- This knock saw him surpass Rahul Dravid, Jacques Kallis, Ricky Ponting and Don Bradman, to move to second position on the all-time Test run scorer list, behind Sachin Tendulkar
- He has also broken the record of the most Test centuries by a England batter at home against one opponent, and most tons against India by any batter
- Ollie Pope also had a spirited role as a support act with 71 runs and he and Root put the pressure on with some good running between the wickets.Their 144‑run stand on 231 balls in the middle session gave the Indian bowlers a headache
- Ben Stokes added a good half-century (77 off 134 balls)**. He left the field hurt after being cramped but came back to complete the day without being out as he finished with Liam Dawson (21)
- Mohammed Siraj had finally cracked in by removing Chris Woakes (4 off 17) after a very patient spell of bowling- his figures read 1/105 off 26 overs
- Jasprit Bumrah had taken a wicket (Jamie Smith) but was not very effective and gave away extra runs through an expensive no-ball
- Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja provided a little bit of resistance; Sundar dismissed Ollie Pope before Jadeja finally dismissed Root in a well timed stumping by Dhruv Jurel
Tactical & Pitch Notes:
- The Old Trafford wicket provided uneven bounce and some eventual spin but the patience and runs shown by England cancelled any effect of the conditions out.
- Commentators pointed out a strategic error of Shubman Gill (captain of India), who changed his match-strategy and bowling and was considered to be one of the reasons why India collapsed
- England are well on top and poised to bat India out of the game should they go in a higher gear in the quest to get a big total tomorrow.
- The bowlers of India should find their rhythm and spot on and the batters should bat with purpose on Days 4 and 5 in order to save the Test .
