JSK vs DSG A New Year's Day Cricket Classic:
on 1 January 2026. Cricket fans got one of the most exciting and dramatic finishes in the history of the SA20 League when the Joburg Super Kings (JSK) narrowly beat the Durban Super Giants (DSG) in the first-ever Super Over at the stadium iconic Wanderers stadium in Johannesburg. But what every fan could possibly expect of the match was big hitting, clutch bowling, heroic fielding, nail biting pressure moments and the drama of a Super Over in order to determine the winner. The Stage & Its Importance: This was match 9 of the SA20 2025/26 season, an important early season match that will define how both teams will go about the season. The Wanderers stadium was brimming with ardent fans who were ready to begin the New Year with banging South African T2O cricket. Both teams came to the contest with momentum and high expectations although it was JSK that ended the contest with a landmark victory. Toss and Match Conditions: JSK won the toss, and decided to bat first, and establish a strong score in front of their home fans. It was a good place to bat in the lights and there was a solid pitch with a bit of pace on it first of all but likely to be strained later in the evening. JSK Batting First: A Big Total Sets the stages (205/4) At the very beginning, the goal of JSK was obvious: to play aggressively and strangle the bowlers of the DSG. The first two Faf du Plessis and Matthew de Villiers leapt to a scorching opening with 89 runs for the first wicket in 8.4 overs. Du Plessis with his excellent timing and hitting strength scoring crucial 47 off 30 balls, and de Villiers with 38 off 26. Their relationship established a good base of the innings. A stable consolidation was witnessed in the middle overs. The innings were anchored brilliantly by the Shubham Ranjane of JSK who remained unbeaten on 50 off 31 balls with four fours and two mammoth sixes. His monotonious knock made sure that the scoring rate did not go down. At the same time, Donovan Ferreira gave fireworks towards the conclusion of the JSK innings when he scored 33 not out out of 10 balls in a rapid fashion with four sixes. It was this late change of pace which enabled JSK to go beyond the 200 mark and finish on 205/4 in their 20 overs and this figure would come in handy later in the match. DSG' Response: A Sensational Chase (205/8) With a target of 206 the Durban Super Giants kicked off slowly but with intent. However, although the DSG batting lineup was initially losing momentum to some part-time bowling by the seamers of JSK, it gradually came to find some rhythm. They were chased off by a dramatic performance of Evan Jones, who completely harnessed the electrical charge by throwing out a 43 off 17 balls, a master-stroke of hits of power that had virtually all fans at their feet. The DSG middle order then assembled a vital 60-run alliance between Aiden Markram and Evan Jones, and breathed life into the pursuit and held the required run rate in check. The team was also properly positioned when the game was to and fro with each boundary and each dot ball. At the time of the death overs, the crowd had the same enthusiasm as the required rate increased and the tension on the field. With the last over of the DSG innings going on, it was obvious that they were on the way to reach the target. All-rounder David Wiese, born in Melbourne and his partners fought hard, and in the last moments of the game, Ferreira used his quick thinking to score the points even at 205/8 with Eathan Bosch having to be running out final delivery and, through his quick thinking, he had forced an unprecedented Super Over in the history of the SA20.
Super Over Showdown: JSK' Nerve Under Pressure
At the conclusion of the regulation time the standings of both teams were 205 each, thus necessitating a Super Over, the first in the history of SA20. The air was hyped and players were ready to have a high stakes confrontation.
Durban Super Giants batted first in Super Over. They were riding on the wave on their late comeback and they would have looked to capitalize on this but were quickly foiled by the excellent bowling by JSK' Richard Gleeson . Gleeson bowled with accuracy and grace with just a few yorkers combined with some smarts to destroy the DSG attack. He had conceded only 5 runs and more importantly two wickets, one of them including the uprooting of the stumps of David Wiese and a run-out, which was in effect the backbreaker of the Super Over by DSG. DSG was able to manage only 5 runs in losing one wicket.
Having to have a small aggregate to win, JSK began well. Rilee Rossouw was the anchor, who smashed the limits at crucial points. JSK took just three balls to reach the target thus securing the victory at 8/0 in just 0.3 overs. The calm but brutal batting by Rossouw also got Super Kings to cross the line safely and with great confidence leading to a riot among the players and fans.
