@Jamie Smith's reaction after scoring a century vs india 2025 |
Morning Session: India are doing their best to fight on
India started the 3rd day at 310/5, continuing the masterclass of Shubman Gill and the set-standing innings of Jadeja
First over played too much drama: Mohammed Siraj bowled Joe Root out LBW on 22 with a nice inswinger
and then proceeded to bag Ben Stokes with a golden duck in his next over- a sign of the rebirth of India following the resistance shown by England
England has a weak combination of strikers
Siraj struck early with two quick wickets as he turned the momentum decisively in India. When the hosts slumped to 84/5, the lower order of the English side appeared to be struggling and this is where the counter-attacks came in the name of Harry Brook and Jamie Smith
Brook-Smith Counterattack
The incredible middle-session stand signaled the resurgence that led England to victory in their game:
- The wicket-keeper-batsman Jamie Smith, took off with his 184* made out of 207 balls--redefining the expectations and recording the fastest century in a Test by a wicket-keeper in English cricket history
- He and Harry Brook then put on a memorable partnership of 303 with Brook scoring 158, his 9th Test century.
After the second new ball had been taken:
- Akash Deep was the first one to break the partnership, sending Brook off in the 158th over, trapped in the mêlée
- Siraj, who was literally in the heels of Deep, bowled him out Brydon Carse LBW and fetched his fifth wicket through an inswinger, and cleared the tail to finish with 6/70
- Deep replicated his partner with 4/88, bowling England out at 407, gaining a lead of 180 runs of India
The start of the india's second innings:
Indian second innings: another good start
India replied:
- KL Rahul and Karun Nair came in to bat in the second innings and with balance and control they led India to 64/1 at the stumps with India leading by 244
- Opening up with Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was dropped early, was sent packing on 28, LBW to Josh Tongue by a DRS call- another close call to India
- The Indian openers changed the heat early, after the wicket, Rahul scored 28 not out in 38 balls
- Shubman Gill- He was out on Day 2 after scoring 269 but he had already dominated. His innings was described as a masterpiece and a combination of patience and aggression, which had been compared to Gooch and Cook
- Mohammed Siraj- Morning-turner, 6/70, he destroyed the England momentum
- Akash Deep Akash Deep - (4/88) proved to be the second new ball bowler as he broke the resistance of the England side with the new ball
- Jamie Smith & Harry Brook - A spectacular stand that hit back hard; 184* was a keepers record score by Smith and 158 was in a partnership glory by Brook
- There was controversy with England fielding and DRS calls- Chris Woakes complained of marginal umpires making decisions in favor of India and he mentioned Jaiswal and Nair decisions earlier in the game
- The Edgbaston pitch is level: it has morning bounce, and swing, but later flattens out: good news to the big-scoring strokemakers, which Brook and Smith were.
- England had bowled 151 overs on Day 2, and exhaustion might have contributed to the three digits at the beginning of Day 3 .
Day 4 What to expect
- India want to establish a big first innings advantage and move above 300 in the second innings.
- By taking early wickets preferably three or four before lunch, England will have to change the pressure.
- Panthers at Edgbaston will begin to speculate about the fifth Test announcement and the weather forecast does not help as it brings rain.
- Gill had helped himself already with his double-ton.
- The morning killer blow was Siraj's six wickets spell.
- The comeback of Smith-Brook gave England drama and hope.
- However, Deep and Siraj destroyed the alliance and restored the control of India.
- A steady second innings by India regained them their foothold on the ladder- with a lead of 244 and nine wickets remaining on the last day.
Brief scores: India 587 and 64/1 (KL Rahul 28*, Yashasvi Jaiswal 28; Josh Tongue 1-12) lead England 407 (Jamie Smith 184*, Harry Brook 158; Mohd.Siraj 6-70, Akash Deep 4-88) (by 244 runs)
