@Gill celebrates after scoring a double century vs England 2025 |
Key Moments Day 2 & Summary
- Gill heaped on the runs: Shubman Gill resumed his master-class on Day 1 and amassed a mind-boggling 269 runs off 387 balls. It was his first Test double century as well as the highest score as Indian captain in an innings.
- Historical accomplishment: He became only the third Indian and the first Asian skipper to score a double in England as well as the first Asian captain to slam a double century in SENA countries
- Technical genius: Gill showed perfect technique both against pace and spin, swapping Bashir to the boundary and taking pressure calmly .
- Jadeja hit 89 before he was caught behind by Josh Tongue an outing before his hundred. In collaboration with Gill, he sewed key alliances which was particularly a 99-run alliance with Gill on Day 1 and a powerful 150-run association on Day 2
- Washington Sundar (42) hung in deep, took the scoreboard along with him after Jadeja was dismissed and helped Gill in the middle.
- India were all out, or declared by stumps, 587, and were in a commanding position
- It is the best away first innings performance at Edgbaston since 2012
- India hit after the first innings of the English team. Akash Deep got rid of Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope back-to-back and Duckett scored a duck, Pope was out to a near hat-trick ball of Deep
- Mohammed Siraj too contributed his share with the wicket of Zak Crawley to reduce England to 13/3 .
- England were still more than 500 runs behind, at stumps, 77/3.
Remarkable Acts & Strategic Ideas
• Ben Stokes Falls Short with the Ball, not the Bat
England captain Ben Stokes did not leave a significant impression with the ball, but is still busy in field conditions. His previous record with bat is spotty
• Defensive Shift by Pant
Rishabh Pant connected his normal aggression with a more conservative game strategy- dragged by the spinners of England, he was dismissed cheaply off Bashir spin
Breakthrough by Aakash Deep
- The breakthrough bowling that Deep gave very early in the second innings of the English team, changed the tides. His dismissal of Duckett, Pope and Crawley was decisive
- The pitch at Edgbaston was rather flat and non-supportive of bowlers. India took the advantage of two extended batting spells and platform provided by Gill and Jadeja
India:
- Batting: They had overpowered with 587, with the top scores being that of Gill and Jadeja at 269 and 89 respectively.
- Bowling: Keen with the new ball in the second innings; Deep and Siraj delivered breakthroughs at the very start.
- Batting: On early recovery, 77/3, and 510 down.
- Bowling: Spoiled a spirited onslaught but was not consistent on a batter-friendly pitch. Woakes and Bashir worked, but with little success
- India are well in the lead: They have a great depth in their batting and have already picked up two wickets, and have a huge lead.
- England needs a miracle: It needs a complete turnaround, bulk wickets and a batting fightback to change the Test equation.
- Tactical shifts to look out: Will India insist on a declaration, or will it leave the England tail to bat into the early hours of Day 3? England will stick to man- rich pace bowling or seek spin?
